Scanning a large collection.
The hard part of a still-image collection is almost never the scanning. It is the volume, and the fact that nobody has ever counted it.
Sort once, and only once
Culling first genuinely saves money, because you are billed per image. But a Saturday spent organising mostly means handling fragile originals more times than they need handling. Sort into keep and discard, resist the urge to reorganise, and stop there.
Do not clean anything
Household cleaning does more damage to old prints and slides than the dust ever did. We handle dust at the scanner.
Decide the order now
Tell us the order you want preserved before you pack. Carousel order, album order and box order are all easy to keep and effectively impossible to reconstruct afterwards, so it is worth two minutes of thought.
Faded colour.
Kodachrome held its colour remarkably well. Ektachrome and many print stocks did not, and shifted towards magenta or cyan. A lot of that is recoverable, but it is per-image work rather than something a batch setting fixes, so it is quoted separately.
A big collection usually has a small number of images worth that work. We will point them out rather than charging for all of them.
Estates and inherited collections.
Several boxes from a parent’s house, in no order, with nobody left who knows what is in them, is the most common large job we see. Send the count and a photo of the boxes. We will suggest an order of work, starting with whatever you most want to see first.
